EKITI ASSEMBLY WARNS AGAINST RECKLESS DRIVING AND INAPPROPRIATE DUMPING OF MATERIALS ON MAJOR ROADS

Members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly have called on road users and the general public in the state to desist from illegal road blockages, reckless driving, and the dumping of materials such as sand, gravel, planks, and other unstable items on major roads across Ekiti State.

The call followed a motion raised at the plenary session on Tuesday by the lawmaker representing Irepodun/Ifelodun Constituency I and Chairman, House Committee on Infrastructure and Public Utilities, Hon. Femi Akindele.

Moving the motion, Hon. Akindele decried the increasing rate at which people, particularly drivers of articulated vehicles, plank sellers, and carriers of unstable materials, block major roads in the state,  describing the practice as uncivilised and dangerous, noting that it requires urgent corrective measures.

Seconding the motion, the lawmaker representing Ido/Osi Constituency I, Hon. Abiodun Fawekun, described it as timely, considering the reckless manner in which some of the identified road users and business operators conduct their activities.

Following extensive deliberations, the House unanimously adopted the motion after which, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye, directed the Clerk of the House to immediately communicate the resolution to the appropriate authorities.

Under matters of personal explanation, the lawmaker representing Oye Constituency I, Hon. Tope Longe, briefed the House on the outcome of a recent meeting held in Abuja on the ban on road taxes and stickers, as well as the crackdown on illegal roadblocks.

While Noting that illegal revenue collectors should no longer harass road users, stressing that their activities must be properly streamlined, Longe further stated that the Joint Revenue Board meeting held in Abuja had vindicated the Ekiti State House of Assembly on the activities of the Joint Revenue Board (JORA) in the state.

Also at the plenary session, the Chairman, Ad hoc Committee on the Ekiti State Draft 2026–2028 Medium-Term Sectoral Strategy (MTSS), Hon. Oluwole Akanle, presented the committee’s report, which was subsequently adopted as the working document of the House.

Similarly, the House received, adopted and schedule for next sitting,  the report of the Committee on Finance and Appropriation on the Ekiti State Revenue Administration Bill, 2025, presented by its Chairman, Hon. Adeteju Okuyiga.

Also,  the College of Technology Bill, 2025, was passed into law following the submission of the report of the Committee on Education, Science and Technology, chaired by Hon. Jacob Awoniyi.

The bill is aimed at improving the current standards of the institution and enhancing its preparedness for upgrading.

Commending his colleagues, Speaker Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye praised members for their contributions, dedication, and commitment to the development of the state adding that the House has proved itself as one of the best to work with.
